ADOLPH KUHLMANN, Superintendent of the wood-working department of the Mattoon Manufacturing Company, was born in Bad-Oeynhousen, Westphalia, Germany, January 11, 1855, being a son of Fred and Caroline (Weber) Kuhlmann, who spent their entire lives in Germany, where the father was a farmer.  Of their five children, four sons and one daughter, Adolph is the second in order of birth, and the only one that has come to the United States.  His educational advantages were fair, he having learned to read both English and German.

    At the age of fifteen our subject began to learn the trade of a cabinet-maker, serving for two years.  In 1873 he sailed from Bremen for New York in a steamer, which made the voyage in eleven days.  A short time was spent in Indiana, but in 1874 he arrived in Sheboygan and worked at his trade until 1879, when he became an employe of G. B. Mattoon.  Soon after he rose to the position of foreman, and in 1888 became Superintendent of the wood-working department of the Mattoon Manufacturing Company.

    Mr. Kuhlmann was married in Sheboygan, October 18, 1879, to Miss Wilhelmine, daughter of Peter Kirst, and a native of the Chair City.  Unto Mr. and Mrs. Kuhlmann have been born two daughters, Ellen and Hattie.

    In his political views, the subject of this sketch is a Republican, and since 1877 has affiliated with the Odd Fellows' fraternity.  Mr. Kuhlmann has a nice home at No. 2104 South Eighth Street, besides owning a dwelling on the North Side.
